At the event, which is an independently organized, official TED event, 15 “ground-breaking thinkers and leaders in their fields will discuss such topics as how to find personal meaning in the business world and how to scale social change in the developing world,” said Jeff Moore, one of the organizers of the event. Moore is the executive director for the Creation for the Creation of Economic Wealth.
“‘TED’ stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design – three broad subject areas that are, collectively, shaping our future,” said Moore, explaining that TED was formed in 1984 as “a nonprofit devoted to ideas worth spreading,” originally as a conference that brought together people from the areas of technology, entertainment and design. Since then, its scope has broadened to “showcase ideas that matter in any discipline.”
“In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program, independent from TED, of local, self organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience,” Moore added, noting that OU is only the second Big 12 school to be granted the prestigious license to host a TEDx event.
Carrying the theme “Astound,” TEDxOU will include presentations by:
• Ken Parker, co-founder of RiskMetrics group and CEO of NextThought
• OU Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art Director Ghislain d’Humieres
• Discovery Channel storm-chaser and TornadoVideos.net creator Reed Timmer
• Kyle Harper, director of the newly established OU Institute for the American Constitutional Heritage and an assistant professor of classics and letters specializing in Roman history.
More speakers will be announced periodically up until the event on tedxou.com.
Moore said it is hoped that TEDxOU will become an annual event at which some of the world’s leading thinkers and doers share information on topics about which they are most passionate.
The event will be held in Meacham Auditorium of Oklahoma Memorial Union.
