2013 Accelerator Grad CultureMap to roll out 200K iBeacons Nationwide
As a part of their most recent $1.5MM from a group of angel investors and 500 Startups’ Dave McClure, ViewMarket and new subsidiary, CultureMap, have announced a plan to place iBeacons into restaurants and retailers throughout the US. The iBeacons will record data and interact with a new mobile app from CultureMap that will help to track the popularity and traffic of top restaurants, bars and shops, with content and reviews for both app users and readers of CultureMap’s website.
From the Dallas Business Journal article announcing the beacon project:
The company, which recently was acquired by Dallas-based ViewMarket in a deal worth $15 million, plans to deploy 200,000 iBeacons at trendy and unique restaurants and retailers across the U.S. The beacons automatically will track CultureMap app users and transmit the data back to the app and CultureMap’s airport concierge shops, telling people what’s currently trending and the most popular spots in the last 30 days. The company is starting the process by rolling out 9,000 iBeacons across Dallas, Houston and Austin, collectively.
